Glasgow City Council, Stantec, Tracsis and Streetwise Services Ltd

Glasgow Citywide 20mph Project

In 2023 Glasgow City Council commissioned Stantec to identify all appropriate streets where mandatory 20mph limits should be introduced, supporting the National Strategy for 20mph and Glasgow’s Transport Strategy and Road Safety Plan. Funded by Transport Scotland, the project aimed to provide an evidence based foundation for a citywide transition to 20mph. Stantec began by developing a comprehensive GIS baseline of existing speed limits, combining desktop review with targeted site validation. Between November 2023 and April 2024, Stantec undertook a detailed assessment of around 5,800 streets (1,800km) subject to 20mph or 30mph limits, applying Transport Scotland’s place criteria. 2000 characters) The Glasgow Citywide 20mph project has delivered a highly effective, evidence‑led foundation for one of Scotland’s largest road‑safety programmes, with work continuing beyond 2024 into full implementation and monitoring.

Glasgow City Region Bus Partnership

Bus Priority AI Measures

Glasgow City Council is delivering one of the UK’s most ambitious applications of AI in live traffic management through an AI powered bus priority pilot on the Pollokshaws Road corridor. Supported by the Scottish Government’s Bus Infrastructure Fund, the project upgrades more than 20 signalised junctions using real time and historical data to enable proactive, predictive bus prioritisation along a strategically important route linking the Southside to the city centre. Building on a smaller 2024 pilot that achieved up to 50% reductions in peak bus journey times, independently validated on street, the project has scaled to full corridor deployment. The 2024 pilot delivered journey time reductions of up to 50% at peak periods, far exceeding typical expectations for adaptive priority.

London Borough of Hackney

Hackney Parking Services

Hackney Parking Services has transformed parking, traffic management and enforcement into an integrated public safety service delivering safer streets, cleaner air and more efficient use of limited road space across one of London’s most complex urban environments. The service not only enforces the road network, but actively shapes it through road safety interventions, kerbside management, sustainable transport initiatives and local traffic management measures. Key initiatives include supporting one of the UK’s largest School Streets programmes, managing boroughwide Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, expanding cycle hangars and electric vehicle infrastructure, introducing emissions-based parking reforms and prioritising kerbside access for Blue Badge holders and vulnerable road users. Diesel vehicles reduced from 28% to 15%, achieving the borough’s 2030 target five years early, while high-polluting vehicles reduced from 40% to 30%, meeting the 2030 target in 2025.

Stagecoach South Wales

Avoidable Road Traffic Accident Scheme (ARTA)

Stagecoach South Wales introduced its ARTA reduction scheme after recording 37.7 avoidable road traffic accidents per million miles in 2023. Its review identified a need for more support after drivers qualified, greater training capacity and a stronger focus on safety in day-to-day depot decisions. The scheme centres on trained “Super Mentors”: experienced drivers who provide structured, supportive coaching during live services, particularly for colleagues in their first two years. Mentoring draws on driving performance and route-specific risks, with attention to speed, road positioning and mirror use. Mentors complete a four-day programme covering both driving standards and constructive feedback.

Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

Real-Time Driver Behaviour Change on Rural Roads

Stockport Council has delivered a targeted road safety and traffic management initiative designed to address speeding, driver awareness and risk on high speed rural and semi rural roads. The scheme has been funded via the Vision Zero Innovation fund, with funding matched from SMBCs road safety budget. The project focuses on three rural corridors - Windlehurst Road, Strines Road and Glossop Road - where collision history and operating speeds present elevated risk, particularly for vulnerable road users. These routes are constrained by alignment and environment, limiting the feasibility of traditional engineering interventions such as segregation or extensive traffic calming. Windlehurst Road recorded reductions of 15% and 39% in vehicles exceeding the speed limit across two monitoring locations.
