Blackpool Transport Services

Festive Family Saver

A campaign to encourage families to save money by travelling together using bus or tram at Christmas has delivered a major boost for Blackpool Transport, its customers and the local economy. Launched late last year to coincide with Blackpool’s Christmas by the Sea events, the initiative was built around a new Festive Family Saver Ticket that enabled two adults and up to three children (under 16) to enjoy a day of unlimited tram or bus travel for just £10. Available to purchase both on board and on the operator’s mobile app, the offer was designed to be as accessible as possible, with no complicated terms and conditions that could put potential customers off.

Campaign for Better Transport

Better Bus Stops

Combining original research, grassroots advocacy and political engagement, Campaign for Better Transport’s Better Bus Stops campaign began in 2024. Having identified the absence of national regulations for bus stop design and accessibility as a critical policy gap, Campaign for Better Transport set out to make a change. its ‘Better Bus Stops: Creating a National Bus Stop Standard’ revealed that bus stop experience ranks among the top four factors influencing passenger satisfaction, yet found accessibility and quality vary hugely. The project has gained widespread public support, with almost 200 media mentions, including coverage in prominent outlets such as The Independent, Daily Mail, and The Times.

Northern

Train Beats Car

Following the Covid pandemic, travel behaviour across the North shifted significantly. While leisure rail demand recovered strongly, commuter rail did not. Hybrid working and increased car reliance became embedded- suppressing revenue and increasing the burden on a taxpayer- subsidised network. Northern had delivered campaigns promoting rail's benefits and tackling value-for-money perceptions. Against this control, targeted routes delivered £82,000 in incremental revenue and a 3.7% revenue uplift.

Transport for Greater Manchester

Hyperlocal marketing to get people on board the bus

Across Bolton, Stockport and Bury Transport for Greater Manchester tested and scaled a new hyperlocal approach to marketing with the goal of shifting short, everyday car trips onto Bee Network buses. From August to October, Transport for Greater Manchester delivered this in 3 phases, with 1 month in each area, starting in Bolton then moving to Stockport and Bury. After identifying services with spare capacity, Transport for Greater Manchester partnered with a behaviour change specialist agency to analyse local travel patterns and turn them into simple, locally relevant reasons to try the bus. Transport for Greater Manchester found most car trips, including taxis, start and end within the same borough, so even a small shift away from driving can deliver meaningful bus growth with the right incentives, such as getting to key destinations nearby.
